1984 Review

I'd been debating whether to get tickets to see the production of George Orwell's 1984 since it started at The Playhouse Theatre at the beginning of the summer. One of the lessons I've learned recently is to stop debating and just do (after plenty of time and careful thought, of course). You can bet I was so glad I did.

This adaptation of 1984 stuck pretty closely to the book (or so I've heard - I have yet to read it!) but I knew the vague storyline which was enough to understand what was going on. The acting was incredible yet believable, especially Matthew Spencer who played the lead, Winston Smith. Everything was precise, well thought-out and completely captured the audience where 'Big Brother is watching you'. The theatre was pitch black and, as we were in stalls, were inches away from the action unfolding before us. With 'Newspeak', hidden cameras, 'thought criminals' and dystopian setting, the *spoiler alert* torture scene was unnervingly realistic.

I came out of that theatre questioning life and wanting to read the novel even more. You know its a good play when that happens.
